3.12 Why people take photos⧉
Every other chapter of this part is about how a photograph is made: the exposure, the lens, the focus, the light. This one asks the prior question, the one a camera designer answers implicitly with every feature: why is the photograph made at all? The answer is not one thing, and it is not mostly what a camera catalog assumes. Decades of field studies in human-computer interaction, and a smaller, sharper body of experimental psychology, have mapped the motives, and the map is worth holding because it explains what people actually want from the machine.
3.12.1 A small map of motives⧉
The single most useful frame comes from Kindberg, Spasojevic, Fleck and Sellen's in-depth study of early camera-phone use Kindberg et al. 2005. They classify each capture along two axes: whether its intent is affective (about feeling: sentiment, beauty, a moment worth keeping) or functional (about a task: remembering a thing, not savoring it), and whether its use is individual (for oneself) or social (for others). The 2×2 is more revealing than a flat list because it names a whole quadrant that most accounts of photography quietly skip: the functional-individual capture. Photographing a whiteboard before it is wiped, the bay number of a parking spot, a receipt, a wine label, a screenshot, the page of a library book: these are not memories or self-expression, they are a notepad made of pixels, and Kindberg found them to be a large share of real camera-phone use. Alongside them sit the affective-individual (a private keepsake), the affective-social (a picture taken to send, to share a feeling), and the functional-social (a photo that coordinates: "this is the part I need," "meet me here").
Van House, Davis and colleagues reached a compatible four-motive summary from their own camera-phone studies Van House et al. 2005: memory and personal archiving, relationship maintenance (staying present in others' lives), self-presentation and self-expression (constructing an identity), and functional or task use. Two pre-camera-phone baselines are worth naming because they set the before-picture: Frohlich and colleagues' "Requirements for Photoware" Frohlich et al. 2002 and Rodden and Wood's study of how people manage digital photographs Rodden & Wood 2003 examined keeping, organizing, and sharing in the era of the shoebox and the early digital camera, when a photo was still mostly a memory to be filed rather than a message to be sent.
3.12.2 From a memory technology to a communication one⧉
That last distinction is the through-line of the modern literature. As the camera merged into the phone and the phone into the social network, the center of gravity of photography moved from keeping to communicating. The dominant reason a picture is taken and shared is no longer to archive a moment for one's future self but to say something to someone now: self-presentation and social exchange are the main drivers of sharing behavior, and "sharing a memory" is the common thread that runs across age groups even as the platforms and the etiquette change. A photograph became less like a diary entry and more like a sentence. This is not a small shift for a camera designer. It is why phones optimize relentlessly for the instant, good-in-any-light, immediately-shareable capture, and why the slow, deliberate, archival virtues of the older craft are exactly the ones the mass-market device stopped competing on.
3.12.3 What the psychology actually shows⧉
The field studies tell you what kinds of photos people take and why they say they take them. The experimental psychology is where the rigorous, causal findings live, and they are more interesting than the surveys because they complicate the easy story.
The first result is encouraging: taking photos, in itself, tends to increase enjoyment of an experience. Across a series of field and lab studies, Diehl, Zauberman and Barasch found that people who photographed an experience enjoyed it more, and the mechanism was engagement: framing a shot draws attention into the scene, and attention is most of what enjoyment is made of Diehl et al. 2016.
But the goal you bring to the shutter can flip the sign of the effect. In a companion program of two field and three lab studies, Barasch, Zauberman and Diehl showed that taking photos with the intention to share them reduces enjoyment relative to taking them for oneself Barasch et al. 2018. The reason is self-presentational concern: once a photo is destined for an audience, part of the mind leaves the experience to manage how it will look, and that self-monitoring costs exactly the engagement the first result depended on. It is a clean causal "why," and a cautionary one for a communication-first medium, because the very sharing that motivates most modern captures can hollow out the moment being captured.
The third result cuts at the oldest justification for the camera, that it is a prosthesis for memory. In Henkel's museum study, participants who photographed objects on a tour remembered them worse than those who merely looked, the "photo-taking-impairment effect" Henkel 2014: hand the remembering to the camera and the mind quietly stops doing it. (The effect eases when the photographer zooms in and attends to a detail, which fits the engagement story: it is inattentive, offloading capture that costs memory, not photography as such.) Taken together, the three findings say something a spec sheet cannot. A photograph is not a neutral recording bolted onto an experience. It changes the experience, sometimes deepening it through attention, sometimes thinning it through offloading or performance.
3.12.4 When people take photos, and why the usual numbers are not evidence⧉
Ask when and how many, and the ground turns soft. A familiar set of figures circulates: on the order of 1.8 trillion photos taken per year, the average American photographing about six times a day, roughly 2,795 photos on the typical phone, and event breakdowns (graduations 45%, weddings 44%, vacations 40%, sporting events 37%, at about 23 photos each). These numbers are quoted almost everywhere and sourced almost nowhere. Traced back, nearly all of them come from a single OnePoll survey of 2,000 US adults commissioned by Mixbook Mixbook / OnePoll photo-habits survey, a photo-book company whose business depends on convincing you that you have too many photos and ought to print them. It is self-reported, it is small, it is a marketing instrument, and it has been re-cited into the appearance of fact. Treat it as color, not data.
The honest fix plugs straight into this book's data thread: you can measure the "when" yourself. The YFCC100M collection carries capture timestamps and, for a large fraction, geotags across about 100 million photos Thomee et al. 2016 (YFCC100M), so time-of-day, day-of-week, seasonality, and the clustering of captures into events are all directly measurable rather than asserted; the Unsplash Dataset adds download and search behavior Unsplash Dataset. "When are photos actually taken, from tens of millions of geotagged captures" is a defensible, reproducible figure, and computing it would make a small original contribution for the datasets chapter (Datasets; the timestamps and geotags it leans on are the subject of EXIF and image metadata).
One caveat points right back at Kindberg's map. Public corpora like Flickr and Unsplash skew hard toward enthusiasts and toward shareable content, so they systematically under-represent the functional-individual captures, the receipts and whiteboards and screenshots, that make up so much of everyday phone use. The clean division of labor is this: the ethnographic literature tells you why people photograph and what kinds of pictures they take; public image corpora can tell you when, but only for the shared, public subset; and nobody has good public data on the private camera roll, which is where most pictures, and most of the functional ones, actually live.
3.12.5 Why this belongs in a book about how images are made⧉
Motive and machine shape each other. A medium whose dominant purpose became communication is a medium optimized for speed, for good-enough-in-any-light, and for instant sharing, which is much of what the computational-photography pipeline in the rest of this book is for. The large functional-individual share is why phones grew document scanners, live text extraction, and QR reading, turning the camera into an input device as much as a memory. And the psychology carries a warning for the technical chapters: every capability that makes photographs easier, more automatic, and more shareable also nudges the act a little away from attention and toward performance and offloading. Knowing why the shutter is pressed is not soft background to the engineering. It is the specification the engineering has been meeting all along.
